Finest tribute

to Alexander McQueen

McQueen was known as a controversial designer, whose work reflected a combination of solid work experience, distinctly British tailoring, the fine craftsmanship of the French haute-couture atelier and the impeccable finish of the Italian product. His designs are characterised by a recurring duality between fragility and strength, tradition and modernity, and changeability and severity.
One week after McQueen's death, François-Henri Pinault, top executive of the French fashion conglomerate Pinault-Printemps-Redoute (PPR, now Kering) and therefore owner of the Gucci Group, announced that he would continue the Alexander McQueen and McQ brands.

The brands were said to be "potentially very important" and their continued existence "the finest tribute we could give him". Sarah Burton, formerly McQeens head of womenswear division and creative director since 2010, was given the creative lead. In 2011, she designed Kate Middleton's wedding dress. She still designs in the spirit of Alexander, but more cheerful and wearable.
