Having been a popular choice to emphasise ultimate luxury among designers for decades, fur has gotten into some hot water over the past few years. As time went on, the debate has gotten even hotter and has led to protests outside fashion shows and to protesters even rushing the runway at fashion shows; take Mary Katrantzou’s just a few weeks ago (despite her not using real fur at all).
In an effort to adhere to the cries of the public, Donatella Versace recently announced that the house of Versace will no longer use fur in its collections. She was quoted saying: “Fur? I am out of that. I don’t want to kill animals to make fashion. It doesn’t feel right.” This is pretty big as opulence is quite a big thing in Versace’s aesthetic and fur has been a staple of the house’s since the beginning.
Whatever the true reason may be behind the brand’s ditching of fur, we applaud the step. Recently, other big fashion houses have moved away from fur as well, including Gucci and Tom Ford.
