From a modest background, Michelangelo Antonioni was a violinist and amateur actor before he became one of the biggest names in cinema, responsible for 20th century film classics including Avventura (1960) with the sublime Monica Vitti, The Night bringing together Jeanne Moreau and Marcello Mastroianni and Blow Up, a captivating mix of crime, fashion and photography. Suffice to say that the Antonioni restrospective at the Cinémathèque will be a joyful chance to dive into the work of the Italian filmmaker and also the themes he explored, namely the attraction, desire, ennui and forgiveness that make up the matrix of love and also lie at the heart of disenchantment.
