This weekend, you can travel to the Bronx, rather than Mexico, to see Frida Kahlo’s famed Casa Azul. The New York Botanical Garden has re-created the Mexican painter’s garden and bright-colored studio for the first-ever botanical-themed exhibition of Kahlo’s work. The real deal, which is located outside of Mexico City, was Kahlo’s lifelong home; she was born there and later transformed it into an artist’s refuge with cobalt blue paint, plants, and her artwork. Art historian Gannit Ankori described the humble dwelling as “a prominent manifestation of mexicanidad.” It was named La Casa Azul, or The Blue House, and Kahlo lived there with her husband, the muralist Diego Rivera, and lots of pets.
