23 year old Dutch designer Daniëlle Cathari has been making waves ever since launching her eponymous label through VFILES last year. The collection she presented consisted of a range of designs shea actually used as a graduation project from Amsterdam’s AMFI. Using vintage adidas tracksuits that she deconstructed and remade the young designer showed she was ahead of the curve and now she’s back, even bigger and better than before.
Since her presentation last year, none other than Adidas Originals decided to reach out. “We all saw what Daniëlle did last year and we were obsessed with it, [the collection] sparked a lot of curiosity for us, and we wanted to see what she would do if we called her up”, notes Adidas Originals’ design director Raffaella Barbey.
As a result of all this, Cathari had the pleasure of presenting her latest collection of designs last week at NYFW at show that featured appearances by Kendall Jenner and TLC. The presentation had an air of genderlessness, with (all female) models looking somewhat boyish among the jungle gym inspired space. On her collection, Cathari noted: “The starting point was the classic 90s adidas look, from there, I wanted to reimagine it and make it modern by adding my signature deconstructed elements, while working with some extreme contrasts.”
The only question that remains is: what’s next? “I’ve learned so much about how it works being a designer in the real world, in school everything is so different. Working with adidas Originals has been crazy, but also such a huge learning process.”
